Description
The X3 is the latest product from EM Acoustics - a system that has been in the making for nearly seven years. Ever since the release of the awe-inspiring Quake subwoofer, there has been a demand for a high power mid/high pack to compliment it - and 2011 sees the arrival of that system. Despite the prominence of line array systems and their suitablility for certain applications, there is still a clear requirement for powerful horn-loaded systems - a demand which the X3 is designed to fulfil. The X3 is intended for a variety of applications - from ground-stacked front of house duties through full flown array systems, and even as stadium side fills, in fills or out fills.
Simple and elegant
The X3 is a tri-amplified, fully horn-loaded system. Through the use of the completely bespoke waveguides, the X3 has an incredibly consistent 20-degree horizontal coverage pattern which is maintained to below 1000Hz. The six one-inch drivers are spaced so that the acoustic centres are close enough for the HF section to behave as a line source in the horizontal plane. This allows X3 enclosures to be used as 20-degree "building blocks" meaning array coverage is a very simple procedure. The X3 literally can be used as a "point and shoot" system with no need to calculate splay angles or to run complex simulations.
Headroom was the key design factor in all three of the X3's frequency bands - both in terms of SPL and frequency response. To ensure smooth crossover between frequency bands, each element is capable of responding far above and below the actual operating band. For example, the 15" low mid driver is actually flat to nearlly 600Hz - this is due to the phase device in front of the driver, and the lack of any parallel walls in the horn system. Despite this, the system crosses over at 380Hz to ensure perfect alignment of the low mid with the high mid system.
Construction
The CNC-machined enclosure is manufactured from 15mm ( 5/8") multi-laminate Baltic birch plywood, rebated, screwed & glued together for maximum strength.
Standard features and rigging
The X3 is supplied as standard with an integral rigging system. This system serves two purposes - firstly it can be used to attach adjacent enclosures together when used on the ground. Secondly, with the addition of the FC-X3 fly beams and MFB-X3 motherbeam, X3 arrays can be quickly and safely flown in the air. Keyhole rigging points on the underside of the enclosure allow the attachment of the forthcoming DF-X3 downfill enclosure, or any other EM Acoustics product with the addition of the DFG-X3 downfill grid.
The X3 also incorporates an innovative and unique drive unit test system. Intended as a quick fault-finding tool, a 9V battery secured within the connector panel powers the system on the press of the test switch. This system disconnects all inputs via high-current relays and instead passes a low current through all eight drive units. All drive units with complete electrical circuits will show a green indicator on a graphical layout of the X3 on the rear panel. In this way, this system can be used to quickly isolate faults and issues on-site and as a quick pre-show check.
The X3 also has seven steel bar handles, to facilitate easy lifting. The X3 can also be supplied with optional touring wheelboards and heavy-duty drop-over covers.
The X3 is finished in semi-matt textured black paint, although colours are available on request. The front of the enclosure is protected by a hex-punched steel grille, backed by acoustically-transparent fabric which can in most cases be colour-matched to the enclosure, even for custom colours. Connection is provided by two IP54-rated Neutrik STX 8-pole Speakon connectors, with an additional 4-pole connector for subwoofer output.

The HALO flying system is designed to be effective, safe and fast. The system has been carefully designed to allow the safe suspension of HALO arrays in a wide variety of situations. The flying system is based around three primary flying grids - the MFG-HALO master grid, the FG-HALO compact grid, the the SLG-HALO sub-link grid.MFG-HALO master flying grid
The MFG-HALO grid is the main grid for the HALO system which can be used for flying HALO enclosures on their own, but must be used to suspend HALO-S subwoofers. The MFG-HALO grid can be used to safely suspend the following maximum combinations of HALO & HALO-S enclosures:
22 x HALO Enclosure
OR
20 x HALO enclosure, 1 x HALO-S subwoofer
OR
16 x HALO enclosure, 2 x HALO-S subwoofer
The MFG-HALO grid is also the optimum choice where small numbers of HALO enclosures are used, but large amounts of down-tilt are required.
FG-HALO compact flying grid
The more compact FG-HALO grid can be used for flying HALO enclosures alone, and is often the better choice where smaller numbers of HALO enclosures are required and/or less down-angle for the array is required. The FG-HALO grid can be used to safely suspend up to 12 HALO enclosures.
SLG-HALO sub-link flying grid
The SLG-HALO link grid must be used when assembling arrays including both HALO and HALO-S enclosures. The SLG-HALO provides the mechanical interface between the HALO-S subwoofer and the much shallower HALO enclosure. The SLG-HALO grid can safely suspend up to 20 HALO enclosures.
Further information on the HALO flying system can be found in the HALO user manual, which is located in the downloads section on our website.
Description
The HALO-S is a compact, dual-driver subwoofer derived from the EMS-215. Containing powerful 15" neodymium drive units, the HALO-S is able to punch well above its weight and produce meaningful, useful low frequency support for flown HALO systems. The HALO-S also provides a useful solution for ground-stacking small HALO arrays where required.
Simple and elegant
The HALO-S, like other EM Acoustics subwoofer solutions, requires an active low-pass filter. Having the two drive units facing each other in the quasi-bandpass design creates a single exit for the low frequency information and a slight compression effect, improving clarity and punch over traditional reflex designs. The enclosure is completely symmetrical, making suspending arrays simple & easy.
Construction
The CNC-machined enclosure is manufactured from 15 and 18mm (5/8" & 3/4") multi-laminate Finnish birch ply, rebated, screwed & glued together for maximum strength.
Standard features and rigging
The HALO-S rigging system is simplicity in itself. It is a four-point design, and when combined with the MFG-HALO master grid and the SLG-HALO sub-link grid it allows HALO arrays to be quickly & safely assembled. Aircraft-grade quick release pins secure the system together, attached to the enclosure via steel lanyards to prevent lost parts.
The HALO-S is finished in semi-matt textured black paint, although colours are available on request. The front of the enclosure is protected by a hex-punched steel grille, backed by acoustically-transparent fabric which can in most cases be colour-matched to the enclosure, even for custom colours. Connection is provided by two IP54-rated Neutrik STX Speakon connectors.
A detachable base board is also provided with the HALO-S, which protects the rigging system for transit purposes, but also adds rubber feet to the base for ground-stacking. This base board is attachable to either the top or bottom of the enclosure, as the HALO-S needs to be inverted for ground-stacked arrays.
Description
HALO is a revolution in line array loudspeaker performance, bringing a new level of clarity, detail and realism into small-to-medium scale sound reinforcement systems. Through the use of the Air Motion Transducer at the heart of HALO, coupled with our patent-pending variable diffraction manifold, HALO is the first system to be able to use a ribbon-style drive unit of this size without the inherent beaming problems in the horizontal plane. Our manifold, designed by R&D Director Ed Kinsella, gives HALO an incredibly smooth, uniform coverage right across the operating band in the horizontal plane, whilst the innovative flying system which pivots the enclosures in the plane of the HF diaphragm, means that adjacent AMT drivers are kept a constant distance apart regardless of enclosure splay. The end result of this is that the array behaves closer to one curved radiator, rather than a number of individual radiators.
Simple and elegant
HALO is a bi-amplified system, with one channel driving the LF/MF section and one driving the HF section. The LF/MF section is comprised of four drive units - two front-firing 6.5" (165mm) high-excursion neodymium drivers for low frequencies, and two partially horn-loaded 6.5" (165mm) neodymium drivers for midrange frequencies. These MF drivers are hand made flat radiators, manufactured from a composite of a standard paper cone and a profiled EPS disc, minimising phase interference and comb-filtering effects. These two pairs of drive units are linked by an internal passive crossover network, providing seamless frequency and phase transition between the two operating bands.
Construction
The CNC-machined enclosure is manufactured from 12, 15 and 18mm (1/2", 5/8" & 3/4") multi-laminate Finnish birch ply, rebated, screwed & glued together for maximum strength.
Standard features and rigging
HALO's rigging system is simplicity in itself. It is a three-point design, where the front two points provide the main strength of the system and allow enclosures to pivot relative to each other, while the central rear point sets the enclosure splay. In this way, arrays can be assembled extremely quickly, and inter-cabinet angles can be adjusted by one person even with the array flown. Aircraft-grade quick release pins secure the system together, attached to the enclosure via steel lanyards to prevent lost parts.
HALO is finished in semi-matt textured black paint, although colours are available on request. The front of the enclosure is protected by a hex-punched steel grille, backed by acoustically-transparent fabric which can in most cases be colour-matched to the enclosure, even for custom colours. Connection is provided by two IP54-rated Neutrik STX Speakon connectors.
